The best thing we can do for our students is to get back to the DRAWING Board.
D=Discipline: We need to bring discipline back to the classroom. Our teachers can't teach if there is no control in the classroom. This means mutual respect between the student and teacher, as well as parent and teacher.
R=Reading: Phonics, good old fashioned phonics instruction.
A=Arithmetic: Back to the basics. No more common core or ten steps for a two-digit multiplication problem. Learn the basics of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, and grow from there.
W=Writing: Learn subject-verb connections, sentence structure and yes, cursive.
I=Innovation: Learning the basics does not mean setting aside innovative ways to teach them. Let the teachers design instructional methodologies that allow student success.
N=Nurture: Our students are facing several forms of trauma at home, from addiction to domestic violence. We need to build a culture of safety so that even in the most difficult of scenarios, the students realize school is a place in which they will be safe and can escape from life's traumas and learn.
G=Greatness: Going back to the DRAWING Board can lead to greatness.
My 35-year career with AACPS has taken me from:
That varied work experience has given me a broad look at how our school system runs, the opportunities to see the successes and see firsthand the challenges that our system continues to face.
The best way the board can be accessible is through an open-door policy. Though sometimes difficult considering the size of a board member's district, it's important to remain open to community input and remain available for discussions.
A very important manner of accessibility is to hold monthly community forums or town halls to seek input and share ideas. Over 35 years of collaboration have taught me that no one individual has all of the answers, and sometimes the best answer comes from the least likely of places.
