The best thing we can do for our students is to get back to the DRAWING Board.
D=Discipline: We need to bring discipline back to the classroom. Our teachers can't teach if there is no control in the classroom. This means mutual respect between the student and teacher, as well as parent and teacher.
R=Reading: Phonics, good old fashioned phonics instruction.
A=Arithmetic: Back to the basics. No more common core or ten steps for a two-digit multiplication problem. Learn the basics of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, and grow from there.
W=Writing: Learn subject-verb connections, sentence structure and yes, cursive.
I=Innovation: Learning the basics does not mean setting aside innovative ways to teach them. Let the teachers design instructional methodologies that allow student success.
N=Nurture: Our students are facing several forms of trauma at home, from addiction to domestic violence. We need to build a culture of safety so that even in the most difficult of scenarios, the students realize school is a place in which they will be safe and can escape from life's traumas and learn.
G=Greatness: Going back to the DRAWING Board can lead to greatness.
My 35-year career with AACPS has taken me from:
That varied work experience has given me a broad look at how our school system runs, the opportunities to see the successes and see firsthand the challenges that our system continues to face.
There is a movement by certain factions of our community and education system that are intent on taking parent's rights away, including the ability to keep your student from ideological curriculum you find objectionable.
In addition, that same faction is working to allow biological males to participate in female athletics and enter female locker rooms and restrooms. President Obama in 2009, signed an executive order allowing males in female facilities. For the most part, the nation fought back by creating neutral restrooms. Unfortunately, President Biden has attempted to modify Title IX, originally developed to PROTECT WOMEN'S RIGHTS, but not being used to strip them of their equal protection under the law. If allowed to be implemented, these polices would have devastating impacts on our young girls in the playing of what are traditionally girl's athletics. These policies MUST BE PREVENTED.
